The irony of comparing Socialist-Progressive Democrat v. Libertarian is that the only real difference between the two groups is who should be in charge. Both believe that the only thing that went wrong in the U.S.S.R., Cuba, China and other Socialist countries is that THEY (the "Americans") were not in charge.
Socialist-Progressive Democrat v. Libertarian
By Frank Laughter, Oct. 2004
Socialism:
1. A political theory advocating state ownership of industry.
2. An economic system based on state ownership of capital
(including land and other real property).

Progressive Democracy:
1. A political philosophy that strong central government is necessary and its main purpose is to "take care" of the people.
2. An economic system that determines what the government's "wants and needs" are and confiscates enough money from the public to meet the government's purposes.

Libertarian:
1. "Let the good times roll…" We'll make up some rules later, after the fact, if we ever find that we need 'em.

Progressive Democrats [1]

Thousands of Americans identify themselves as "Progressives." Thousands more make it clear that they are Libertarians. Both groups support candidates for public offices at all levels.

However, large numbers of "Progressive, Democrats" [2] AND "Libertarians" DO NOT identify themselves publically. In fact, they are downright secretive in certain aspects of their political activity UNTIL they can secure high-level positions in public office such as in the U.S. Congress or in state capitals. Good examples are Bob Barr of Georgia and Dick Armey of Texas. Both served in the House of Representatives as Republicans and were re-elected time-after-time as Republicans. They both left Congress in the same year and then admitted they were actually Libertarians. — Much to the chagrin of their ideological soulmates (but competitors for power), the Progressive Democrats (PD), both Barr and Armey joined the ACLU. This created a serious dilemma because, with no alteration of political philosophy, the PDs had to start hugging 'em instead of slugging 'em.]

To get elected, Progressive Democrats hide out in the Democrat's Party and Libertarians hide out in the Republican Party. Both groups believe that there should be no boundaries on personal social behavior and that the concept must be enforced by the federal government. Both groups believe its wrong to restrict immigration and that public religious expression from Christians and Jews must be STOPPED. [If these people want freedom of religious expression, let them become Hindus or Islamists.]

In answer to the question, "which is worse?" — They are equally evil; both groups threaten the traditional American system of a representative democratic republic. Progressive Democrats and Libertarians are determined to do what Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev promised to do more than forty years ago: "Overthrow the U.S. government without firing a shot."

Progressive Democrats have reached (and maintain) a pinnacle of success with people like Ted Kennedy leading the way. In fact, the U.S. Senate poses the biggest threat to the traditional American system because over half of the Democrats there are Progressives. Check the list: Kennedy, Kerry, Biden, Boxer, Byrd, Cantwell, Carper, Clinton, Corzine, Daschle, Dayton, Durbin, Edwards, Feingold, Bob Graham, Harkin, Inouye, Lautenberg, Leahy, Mikulski, Murray, Reed, Reid, Schumer and Stabenow.

There are a couple of others whose Senate records are sometimes equally as bad but they occasionally cast a sane vote. However, they don't have enough seat-security for us to determine if they are voting their conscious or trolling for votes back home.

This is not "name calling." Those listed have said that they are "Progressives" and and its silly to claim at other times that they don't mean what we know it means: Socialism. (John Kerry has always been very proud to be called "Progressive" and since their marriage, his wife has become a big supporter of "Progressive" organizations and causes.)

Libertarian

Libertarianism is easier to describe than Progressive Democracy because at the core, Libertarians don't believe in much. They have this utopian philosophy that is really nothing more than "let everybody do their own thing." In reality, when we look into it we find that the concept has already been tried and actually assigned a name: Its called ANARCHY.

ANARCHY
1. A state of lawlessness and disorder (usually resulting from a failure of government).
2. Society run on the principles of anarchism.

Libertarians believe its wrong for nations to secure their borders. They envision a world concept where everyone just sort of ambles around in a Roddy King-like stupefaction: …"why can't we all just get along."

In fact, Libertarians I've talked to think that the old-fashioned notion of restricting people from yelling "fire" in a crowded theater is tyranny.

Notes:
[1] Euphemism for Socialist. (See: Progressive Liberals).

[2] I am as perplexed as the next person about the comma sometimes used between the two words. Evidently those who publically acknowledge that they are "Progressive, Democrats" are trying to separate their group from organizations with similar names in other countries. For simplicity, I have chosen to ignore the comma.
