George Washington Imported the First Mule to America
George Washington was more than just a President, military leader, statesman and land surveyor.
He was multi-talented; A pioneer of advanced agricultural concepts, he introduced terracing of lands on his plantations to reduce erosion, crop rotation to conserve soil viability, and cover crops to minimize top soil loss. He imported the first mules in the 1780's and they were workhorses (sorry) on American farms until the invention of the tractor in the late 1800's.
Demonstrating his versatility, Washington made important architectural contributions through building features notable at Mt. Vernon, especially the open portico connecting the two main buildings. Prior to this open concept, colonnades such as those at Mt. Vernon had a closed backside which restricted line-of-sight from front to backyards.
