Wife of Chester A. Arthur
Ellen Lewis Herndon was born in Culpeper, Virginia, the only child of Elizabeth and William Herndon, a naval officer.
Her father's assignments moved them to New York City where, in 1856, a cousin introduced her to Chester Arthur, a successful lawyer and politician.
The following year her father was lost at sea and in 1859 she married Arthur.
They had three children, two boys and a girl. One boy and the girl survived childhood.

Her husbands practice prospered and he served as Collector of the Port of New York so Ellen lived a comfortable life.
In January, 1880 Arthur was away on business and Ellen attended a concert in New York City. She caught a cold and died of pneumonia two days later, January 12, 1880. She was only 42 years old.
Her death came only 14 months before her husband was installed as Vice President and just 20 months before he moved into the Presidency after Garfield's assassination.
Arthur died on November 18, 1886, from a kidney disease. He was 56 years old.
