When residents of Manhattan say New York they usually mean the whole city--not just Manhattan. Others tend to think only of Manhattan. Residents of the other boroughs generally refer to Manhattan as New York. In terms of land area, Manhattan is smallest of the five boroughs. Within New York City, boroughs are like counties: Manhattan is New York county; Bronx is Bronx county; Queens is Queens county; Brooklyn is Kings county; and Staten Island is Richmond county. Kings? Richmond? Go figure. The population of New York City is about 7.5 million but grows daily as 1 million more commute into the city. Over 350,000 of those arrive from New Jersey.

The island of Manhattan--bought from the Indians for about $24, or less than $1 per square mile--is 12 miles long and less than 2 miles wide at Midtown; smaller than many mid-sized towns. Photos below show a few of the thousands of magnificient treasures to be enjoyed there... just the tip of the iceberg.
