Bute county, North Carolina, was formed in 1764 but had a short life. Bute was eliminated in 1779 with the formation of Warren County. Parts of old Bute now lie in Franklin, Granville, Vance, and Warren Counties. Record searches, at a minimum, should include those county seats. However, it is possible that some old records made it into any of the Northeastern counties of North Carolina because that whole area originally lay in old Albemarle County. Other possible sources are within a triangle of Southeastern Virginia, from Brunswick County, Virginia, to Surry County, VA, to City of Norfolk, VA. See: Evolution of North Carolina Counties
